525 Years of Indigenous Resistance

Organized by Mapuche Foundation FOLIL, Stichting Kaikoesie, HIJOS and Masterpeace.

While for many, October 12th symbolizes the ‘discovery’ of the New World by Italian explorer Christopher Columbus who landed ashore the Americas in 1492, this date epitomizes the historic turning point marking the beginning of an era of oppression for all indigenous peoples in the Americas. However, October 12th has also been the beginning of Indigenous Resistance against this invasion.

For 525 years indigenous peoples have been defending their land, culture, language and their People

Nowadays transnational corporations and governments develop big infrastructure projects, agroexport activities and raw material extraction on indigenous people territories. Not only by ignoring their rights as indigenous peoples, they persecute, imprison and kill those who stand up against these injustice.

In southern Argentina, a land conflict has recently led to the ‘disappearance’ of a young activist from the province of Buenos Aires. Santiago Maldonado, was supporting the claim of land of a Mapuche community occupied by the Italian clothing corporation Benetton.

In Chile, 4 political Mapuche prisoners recently held a hunger strike of 118 days to protest against their imprisonment in the Temuco prison. In a operation called «Huracán», another 8 Mapuche leaders were arrested.

At Maho in Surinam, the Indigenous Peoples have been haunted on their territories since 2005, by the landowner Abdoelrahman, who has false property papers and sells sand excavations.

On Saturday 14 October 2017 we will meet each other in Amsterdam, the Netherlands to celebrate The Indigenous Resistance and support their struggle around the world.

Voor velen, symboliseert 12 oktober de ontdekking van de Nieuwe Wereld door de Italiaanse ontdekkingsreiziger Christoffel Columbus (Italiaans: Cristoforo Colombo) die in 1492 in de Americas aankwam. Deze datum is een historische keerpunt, het begin van een tijdperk van onderdrukking van verschillende inheemse volken. 12 oktober is echter ook het begin van verzet tegen deze invasie. Inheemse volken hebben vandaag 525 jaar hun grondgebied, cultuur, taal en hun bestaan verdedigd.

Vandaag ontwikkelen transnationale bedrijven en overheden grote infrastructuurprojecten, agroexport-activiteiten en grondstoffenwinning in de gebieden van de inheemse volken. Niet alleen negeren zij hun rechten als inheemse volk, ze vervolgen en doden hen die zich tegen deze onrechtvaardigheden verzetten.

In het zuiden van Argentinië heeft het landconflict onlangs geleidt tot de verdwijning van een jonge activist uit de provincie Buenos Aires. Santiago Maldonado, had zich bij de Mapuche gemeenschap aangesloten in solidariteit met hun aanspraak op grond bezet door de Italiaanse kledingbedrijf Benetton.

In Chili hielden onlangs 4 politieke Mapuche gevangenen een hongerstaking van 118 dagen om te protesteren tegen hun gevangenisstraf in de gevangenis van Temuco. In een operatie Huracán worden nog eens 8 Mapuche leiders gearresteerd.

Op Maho in Suriname worden de Inheemsen al vanaf 2005 getreiterd op hun woon en leefgebied door grootgrondbezitter Abdoelrahman die met valse eigendomsbewijzen, zandafgravingen verricht voor verkoop. Bewoners hebben protest hiertegen aangetekend.

Op zaterdag 14 oktober 2017 zullen wij in Nederland samenkomen om het inheemse verzet te vieren en hun strijd over de hele wereld te steunen.

Marri marri pu peñi, pu lamuen, pu wenuy ka kom pu che (Good day brother and sister, also friends and all people.)

Our Mapuche people are facing a complex situation.
The repression by the Chilean government continues with deliberately accusations against our noble communities in Resistance and against the Mapuche Political Prisoners.

Today there are more than 30 brothers and sisters who face persecutions. Four of them are carrying out an extreme hunger strike for more than 100 days. In addition, two young Mapuche Warriors (Weichafe) Luis Marileo and Patricio González were murdered by a former police officer and landowner in the Malleco region with out any punishment. Along this, the government of Chile and Argentina are preparing a persecution on the Indigenous Mapuche claims and our historically struggle as one nation on both side of the countries.

Chile and Argentina both protect the investments of landowners on a malicious way of the forestry companies and other multinationals that exploit and are devastating our territory and natural resources, affecting the harmony of the Mapu ñuke (mother earth) and also the future and right of our children to grow up in our Wallmapuche (Mapuche Land).

The «anti-terrorist» law inherited from the dictatorship of Pinochet and perfected by the agreement of the nueva mayoria (Bachelet) only pursues opponents, social fighters and mainly the Mapuche people. For all this, we extend a call to all people who sympathize with our struggle to participate on a big march in support of the Mapuche Resistance.
